Thinking about Recruitment 2011?

We at the Panhellenic Association are very pleased to present the 2011 Recruitment Guide! In it you can find information about each of the seven NPC chapters at Butler, important dates for Panhel recruitment events and chapter philanthropy events, and helpful recruitment tips from the Panhellenic Association. The guide can be found here.

As you can see, the theme of this years recruitment is "Find Sweet Sisterhood." This means that we have plenty of sweet treats for you throughout the semester!

Welcome Back, Butler

Hey there Bulldogs! It's hard to believe that summer has gone by so fast. It seems like just yesterday we were all driving ourselves crazy by simultaneously studying for finals and packing up to ship off for summer adventures! But now we're back on campus and we're ready to have the best year ever, aren't you?

To all of the freshmen and transfer students that are new to our campus, welcome! We hope you're already getting to know and love Butler and are taking advantage of all of the great opportunities that being a Butler Bulldog affords you!

The Panhellenic Association has been hard at work all summer getting ready for this semester. Did you know that recruitment doesn't just happen for a week in January? We hold events all throughout the Fall in order for you to become familiar with all of the NPC chapters on campus, as well as what goes on during recruitment. These events will be starting soon, so be sure to check back here or on Facebook & Twitter so that you don't miss a single one!

Last night the school year kicked off with Block Party. All of the chapters looked great, and we are so excited by the number of girls who signed up to receive recruitment information from us! We hope to see all of you at all of our events this semester! If you didn't get a chance to sign up last night, don't worry, you're still more than welcome to come to our events and see what sorority life is all about. Our 2011 recruitment counselors!

We held interviews last week to select our recruitment counselors for the next school year. We were extremely impressed with all of the women that applied. Each and every one of them were excellent representations of our Panhellenic community. After some tough decisions, we have selected 26 women to lead potential new members through recruitment in January. The group is made up of women from every house and campus and both juniors and seniors.

What has Panhel been up to? I'm so glad you asked.

Guess what Bulldogs, Spring is here! Between midterms, spring break, and rooting on our basketball boys as they head into the Sweet 16 (too big yo), everyone at Butler has been pretty busy, and Panhel is no exception. In the past month, we've held Anti-Hazing Week, sponsored a women's basketball game, and co-sponsored a sexual health panel with PAWS and GEAR. Wow!

For Anti-Hazing week, chapters made banners to hang outside their houses as a way to show support. Here are a few of them:

Also for Anti-Hazing week, students were given the opportunity to sign handprints that said "I pledge to help STOP hazing," and were displayed in Starbucks. Over 400 Butler students signed the pledge!

The hands were displayed in Starbucks, along with facts about hazing.

We also had the opportunity to sponsor a women's basketball game, where we gave out water bottles to sorority women at the event. On March 1st (which was also International Badge Day), we co-sponsored a sexual health panel with Peers Advocating Wellness in Students and Greeks and Educators, Advocates, and Resources. We managed to pack JH141 with students listening to our panel of experts!

March has been a great month for Panhel and we can't wait to finish out the school year strong!

So you want to be a Recruitment Counselor.

It’s that time of year again! The Panhellenic Association is looking for recruitment counselors for Recruitment 2011!

Being a recruitment counselor gives women the opportunity to see the OTHER other side of recruitment. Recruitment counselors have the chance to meet and bond with women from every sorority at Butler.

So what exactly do recruitment counselors do? These are the women who guide potential new members through the stressful recruitment process. Recruitment counselors will disaffiliate from their chapter for the entire Fall 2010 semester. No, that doesn’t mean you aren’t allowed to live in your chapter house or hang out with your sisters, but it does mean that you aren’t allowed to wear your letters or participate in your house’s philanthropy events.

We are looking for women that are enthusiastic and outgoing, and who are also willing to listen to the potential new members and help them through the difficult week that is recruitment.

Just think, come January 2011, this could be YOU.

In order to be a recruitment counselor, a woman must be a member of a Butler University sorority, and must have been on both sides of recruitment (as a potential new member and as a sorority member). We encourage women that are currently studying abroad to apply, but we unfortunately will not be able to accept women that plan to study abroad in the Fall of 2010, since they will miss several important training workshops.

What do early morning fire alarms, Minglesticking, and fraternal values have in common? AFLV 2010

This weekend was the annual meeting of the Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values and National Black Greek Leadership Conference, which was held in St. Louis. Katie, Emily S., Emily C., left from Butler on Thursday afternoon and made the drive to St. Louis with our advisor Becky Druetzler.

Throughout the weekend we had the opportunity to attend a lot of great sessions and see many inspirational speakers. The great thing about AFLV/NBGLC is that it’s the largest fraternal values-focused conference in the country so we had a TON of options for topics to learn about. While we went to several sessions that applied to our offices (Katie went to a lot about recruitment, Emily S. went to several about social media and PR, and Emily C. sat in on many about hazing and risk management), we also went to a few special interest presentations. On Saturday we saw a presentation about HIV/AIDS from Shawn and Gwenn, a couple that deals with HIV on a daily basis. We also all attended a “Hot Topic” session about the show GREEK, where we watched clips from the show and talked about different issues from the series such as hazing, media portrayal of Greek life, and acceptance and diversity.

Among the many people we got to meet this weekend were our own sisters! On Friday, we attended an affiliation luncheon and had the chance to meet members of our individual sororities from all over the country. It was amazing for all of us to meet so many women from so many different schools and have an instant bond with them. We shared songs, stories, philanthropy and recruitment ideas, and of course, lots of sisterhood! Pretty much anything you could talk about with someone who you instantly feel like you’ve known for years, we did.

The word of the weekend (and a new personal favorite of ours) had to be “minglestick.” The Minglestick is a small, USB-type device that is essentially a digital business card. To “mingle” with someone, you simply point the Minglesticks at each other and press a button. All of your information then transfers to each other, and you can access it on your online account. As much fun as we had throwing the word minglestick around all weekend (not to mention the fun we had using it to completely confuse our friends at home), they were really innovative and useful throughout the conference. Single and ready to Mingle(stick)

The low point of the weekend came at about 5:15 on Saturday morning. Unfortunately, when you put a large amount of college students in the same place, not everyone always acts responsibly, and some shenanigans are bound to happen. So, if you’ve ever wondered what three extremely tired, angry, and confused Panhel Exec members look like after being woken up in the middle of the night after someone in their hotel pulled a fire alarm…here’s your answer.

On the plus side, everyone got to see our sweet PJs.

Other than our early morning wakeup call, AFLV was a huge success. Along with the many amazing and inspiring speakers, we got to see a stroll competition, experience a model “Up Till Dawn” event (similar to Butler’s Dance Marathon) for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, learn about other Greek communities, and meet members of other organizations. The weekend ignited our passion for Greek life and gave us many ideas that we can't wait to implement in our own Greek community at Butler!

Welcome!

Welcome to the official blog of the Butler University Panhellenic Association! We've got a lot going on this semester, and we're excited to share it with you!

So what exactly does the Panhellenic Association do? We serve as the governing body for all of the sororities on campus. We organize and run recruitment and help facilitate communication between the chapters. More than anything, we want to serve as a resource for all of the chapters on campus. This year one of our biggest goals is to help de-program campus by working with other organizations like IFC, PAWS, Demia, and Dawg Pound. We want to bring fewer, but more relevant programs to the sorority women of Butler University.
